"That was quite an incredible experience... intersections between the new and the old, the traditional and the contemporary... that fits within ASI's mission of being a gathering place for all. I appreciate the 113 Composers Collective approach to creating moments like this."
—Scott Pollock, Director of Exhibitions, American Swedish Institute
"I'm really impressed with the dedication to the organization, and I'm sure if that continues, 113 will make a mark.”
-Bill Solomon, New York Percussionist
113 Composers Collective provides a platform for musicians pursuing bold artistic visions through ambitious programming, community building, and educational outreach that greatly exceeds the industry standard.
Since its inception in 2012, 113 has presented over fifty world premieres and worked with renowned new music composers and performers such as Anthony Cheung, Chaya Czernowin, James Dillon, Julio Estrada, Brian Ferneyhough, Michael Pisaro, Collect/Project, Duo Gelland, Ensemble Dal Niente, Fonema Consort, The Gregorian Singers, Marcelo Rilla, Bill Solomon, Strains New Music Ensemble, and dozens of local musicians of the highest caliber.
The founding members of 113 met at the University of Minnesota in 2012. Their shared commitment to ambitious projects that capture bold musical ideas became quickly apparent as they worked together in the Contemporary Music Workshop, an ensemble directed by composer, James Dillon. Upon completing their tenure at the University of Minnesota, these artists agreed to continue the adventurous programming and community outreach they had undertaken there. The 113 Composers Collective was formed to fulfill this mission.
CALL FOR SCORES
113 invites both national and international composers each year to submit their works to be programmed during the 113 concert season. Selected composers also receive audio and video documentation of these performances.
113 runs a small publishing company that disseminates work by contemporary composers.
113’s community outreach and educational initiatives at schools, senior centers, and cultural centers help to demystify new music through engagement with people whose circumstances might typically bar access.
113’s 7-month long, 2017-18 program with Folwell School engaged predominately Hispanic/Latinx, low-income children grades 5-8. This project culminated in a collection of student works that won the youth division of the Erik Stokes Song Competition.
"I need to come to more of these concerts. This is blowing my mind!"
